The governorate of Tripoli (Tripolitania) gained independence from the Ottoman Empire in the era of Qaramanli dynasty (1711-1835) when Ahmad Qaramanli seized the helm of power and established a family dynasty which lasted for 124 years. During that period, Tripoli gained almost complete independence from the Ottoman Empire, except in aspects such as the appointment of new Qaramanli governors by the Ottoman Sultan and supplication for the Ottoman Sultan in every Friday congregational prayer sermon. This independence was reflected in the urban development and architecture of Tripoli over the long period of most of the Qaramanli leaders vis-à-vis the declining first era of Ottoman rule when succeeding governors did not last long, some of them survived only a short time span of months, days or hour. This study intends to delve into the factors which contribute to the urban development and progress of Tripoli city such as political, social and economic factors, including their effect. It also attempts to study the urban manifestations of these factors. As this Muslim city drew the attention of researchers interested in its urban manifestations over its various historical periods, this study seeks to trace the findings of prior research and apply them to Tripoli city of the Qaramanli era, in an attempt to fill the shortage of literature relating to this matter, at the Libyan library specifically, and Muslim library generally. In line with this objective, different academic approaches, relevant to its topics and sub-topics, are applied in this study. Historical and descriptive approaches are applied to the aspects of building and architectural structures identified in this study. In addition, analytical approach is applied to data by examining its sources, architectural elements and the factors which influenced and counter-influenced urban development and architecture in Tripoli and other cities, especially in the Ottoman Empire, including neighboring cities in North Africa. This study finds that urban development and progress of Tripoli city was the result of political factors which unfolded over different periods of Qaramanli dynasty rule. In the Qaramanli era of Ahmed Pasha as well as Yusuf Pasha, political stability contributed to architectural progress of this city. Likewise, the economic factor reflected in expanded trade and revenue from maritime war activity also contributed tremendous profit to the state treasury, enabling development of urban areas in Tripoli. This development revived prosperity manifested in the form of markets, hotels and mosques which sprung up. Likewise, the urban areas of Tripoli were filled with a diverse population of Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities and every district of the city was distinguishable from others. The Muslim districts were marked with mosques of distinctive conservative architectural designs. In contrast, the Jewish and Christian districts had their synagogues and churches, and in predominantly Christian sections, churches were influenced by European style and architectural tradition.,Ph.D
