Reactive power compensation has been widely used to increase the steady state transmittable power by controlling the voltage profile along the transmission lines in power systems. A number of reactive compensation devices such as shunt capacitor, static Var compensator (SVC) and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) have long been applied by electric power utilities for this purpose. However, the benefits of reactive power compensation depend greatly on the placement and size of the compensators. For the purpose of finding optimal placement and sizing of Var compensators, two novel optimization techniques, namely, the improved harmony search (IHS) algorithm and the global harmony search algorithm (GHS) are applied for generating new solution vectors so as to enhance the accuracy and convergence of the conventional harmony search (HS) algorithm. In this research, the IHS and GHS algorithms are used together with the backward/forward sweep power flow method and radial harmonic power flow for determining the optimal placement and sizing of capacitors in radial distribution networks for minimizing the power loss and total cost by considering mutual coupling, load unbalancing and harmonics. The IHS and GHS algorithms are also employed to determine the optimal location and size of Var compensators such as shunt capacitor, SVC and STATCOM in transmission networks to enhance voltage stability and improve voltage profile by minimizing power loss and total cost. A comparative study has been done to evaluate the effectiveness of the different Var compensators. To implement the developed IHS and GHS algorithms, the backward/forward sweep power flow and radial harmonic power flow methods in an open source environment, a Matlab based software tool named as Optimal Placement of Shunt Var Compensators has been developed. To validate the accuracy of the IHS and GHS algorithms, the three-phase 10 bus and 34 bus radial distribution systems were used for optimal capacitor placement and the 57 bus and 118 bus transmission systems were used for optimal placement of various Var compensators. The optimal capacitor placement results show that the IHS and GHS algorithms increase the net saving up to 27% and give greater reduction in power loss and total costs compared to genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the conventional HS algorithm. The results of optimal placement and sizing of different Var compensators in transmission systems show that the IHS and GHS algorithms give lower power loss, better voltage profile and improved voltage stability compared to GA, PSO and conventional HS algorithm. The comparative study results show that although SVC and STATCOM are expensive compared to shunt capacitor, the effect of installing STATCOM is better than SVC and the effect of installing SVC is better than shunt capacitor in achieving power loss reduction, voltage profile improvement and voltage stability margin enhancement.,PhD
