Description: | In recent years, due to energy crisis and environment pollution control, microbial fuel cell (MFC) as a clean and renewable source of energy was developed. In this study, glucose with initial concentration of 30 g.L-1 was utilized as electron donors for production of electrical energy using Saccharomyces cerevisiae (PTCC 5269) as active biocatalyst. The performance of MFC was analyzed by the measurement of polarization curve and cyclic volatmetric data as well. Neutral red, benzyl viologen, humic acid and phenothiazines were utilized as electron shuttle in the anode chamber. Neutral red with concentration of 200μmol.L-1 had the best ability to transfer the liberated electrons to anode surface. Oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, potassium sulphate, potassium ferricyanide and potassium permanganate at several concentrations (50 to 500 μmol.L-1) were applied as oxidizer in cathode chamber. Potassium permanganate with concentration of 300 was chosen as oxidizer in cathode compartment. With the use of potassium permanganate as oxidizing agent in cathode chamber enhanced the voltage, current and power density were 508 mV, 870 mA.m- 2 and 160mW.m-2, respectively. Configuration of MFC on power generation is comprehensively discussed. Also, continuous and stack of MFC was analyzed in this research. The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on performance of MFC was examined. The optimum HRT was found to be around 7 hours. Maximum produced current and power density at optimum HRT were 1210 mA and 283 mW.m-2, respectively. Closed circuit voltage in fabricated stack was obtained using a 1000 Ω resistance at external circuit. The voltage at steady state condition was around 1 V and it was stable for the entire duration of operation time. Finally, produced power in MFC was applied in low supplied equipment such as LED lump, electronic clock, etc.,PhD |
