dc.description | To meet the demands for high performance pavements, polymer-modified asphalt binder had been introduced to the industry in so many studies for over 40 years ago. In order to lower the production temperatures, the introduction of warm mix asphalt (WMA) technologies leads to substantial environmental improvements by lowering the greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the engineering properties of performance grade 76 binder (PG76) modified with WMA additive namely, Rediset LQ 1106 (0 to 5% by weight of the binder) for WMA paving application. Physical characteristics of PG76+Rediset were obtained from several testings such as penetration, softening point, viscosity, and ductility tests. Atomic Force Microscopy used for force measurement, imaging, and manipulation at nanoscale was carried out. Fourier Transform Infrared technique was used to identify molecular components and structures of PG76+Rediset. The surface free energy of the blends, was deterrmined using contact angle measurement by Sessile Drop Device. Adhesion and stripping behaviour were also observed via Vialit Adhesion Test and Boiling Water Test. Modified Tank Leaching test was conducted to observe the effect of PG76+Rediset to the groundwater. Generally, various Rediset content in PG76+Rediset gives a variation of physical and chemical characteristics. Rediset was found to had an effect on PG76 however, the consistency of physical characteristics was not in good term with the increment of Rediset weight. The penetration values, softening point temperatures, and ductility characteristics were not in consistent pattern as the Rediset amount. The analysis of penetration index (PI), relative viscosity (RV) and penetration viscosity number (PVN) do not provide a suitable means of measuring the rheological characteristics of the new materials because it involved polymer modified binder. On the other hand, Vialit adhesion test and boiling water test showed that the addition of Rediset into PG76 did not affect the adhesion and stripping resistance characteristics of PG76. At different temperature, the viscosity of each combination had decreased with the increment of temperature even though the trend was not significantly constant. Anyhow, the activation energy of flow was a bit on the higher side because the designated study temperature was at the lower side compared to the decomposition temperature which resulted lower activation energy. Surface interaction-wise, with the addition of Rediset, the contact angle became smaller/less; indicates that PG76+Rediset had become more hydrophilic. However, surface roughness does not have any influence on the surface free energy of material. On the other hand, the surface free energy of PG76+Rediset does not resemble the increment rate of Rediset. Meanwhile, at micro scale, PG76+Rediset showed quite a consistent topography development. However, the findings were not in agreement with the amount of Rediset in PG76. The findings were only right because the measurements were done at microscale. Finally, by modified tank leaching test, PG76+Rediset in all combinations were found to be save for the environment despite the prolonged high rainfall intensity. Submerged PG76+Rediset were found to contributing heavy metal in leachate way below the minimum allowable value of WHO and MOH Malaysia drinking water standard. The effect of PG76+Rediset to the nearby soil also discovered to be safe even after 100 years. From the tests conducted, it can be concluded that the blending of PG76+Rediset offers a superior performance in producing asphalt mixtures that have better anti-stripping effect and also improves the strength bond properties of the binder.,Ph.D. | |
