Description: | Cities have been created gradually with the new forms based on the level of economic and political development in their society. Urban forms have been changed in new urban societies regarding their natures and scales. The loss of city character and identity is one of the problems that arise from accelerating urbanism. Currently, Asian countries are moving after developed countries, and they see the solution to the housing crisis only in assimilating and dense building. The aim of this study is to find out the character (physical identity) of Boshrooyeh city in Iran. The purpose is to investigate the presence or absence of continuity in character of the city and its urban tissue. Finally, utilization of the city's typological patterns for continuity of character in destroyed parts and new developing areas were examined. The research strategy included a case study and also a combination (qualitative and quantitative). Urban tissue method -as one of the urban morphology approaches- and main structure theory are also conducted as to define the identifying criteria of character. These criteria were used in two scales; for the whole of city and selected areas (90 Blocks and 298 Plots/Buildings). Assessment criteria of character were also in two scales; macro and micro based on critical regionalism theory and definition of character. The tactics of the study focused on data collection and research documents. Instruments which were used in this research are inclusive of maps (cadastral), photos, movies, sketches, and observation. Typology method, form analysis (blocks, plots, and buildings), and SPSS software were applied for data analysis and achieving the results. The analysis contains two parts; identifying and assessment. The results of the identifying part indicate typology of blocks, plots, buildings, and urban tissues in Boshrooyeh city. The results of assessment part also revealed two features; lack of harmony and contrast in image of the city, and changes in physical urban form. However, some main structures of the city (Bazaar, Main Square, and change from inner to axial), blocks, buildings, and widening of streets were destroyed; it was found that the city character still remains. It was also discovered that if development continues at such a rapid rate, city character and identity will gradually destroy in near future. The main conclusion is despite all the changes in urban spaces, traditional forms can still be used certainly not only to imitate but also for re-interpretation of our understanding of them. Suggestions were proposed for maintaining and sustaining of city character and identity. These suggestions can be used in design process and review of conservation area boundaries.,Ph.D.,Certification of Master's / Doctoral Thesis" is not available" |
