dc.description | A reduction in private vehicles is important for the future of cities, even though this is challenging, the economy, environment and society can reap benefits of such necessity. Private vehicles have certain advantages over public transportation in terms of reliability, speed, flexibility, safety and comfort. The purpose of this study is to, first, to establish whether the core Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) constructs of attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control would significantly predict intentions to use public transport. Second, to explore whether additional constructs to the TPB model would contribute to the prediction of intentions to use public transport over and above the core TPB components. Third, to determine which public mode of transport was preferred by commuters in this study. In order to understand travellers' willingness to use public transport, this study adds four predictors - situational factors, trust, novelty seeking and external influence along with demographic variables- to the existing TPB model. The study collected research data from employees in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, resulting in valuable data of 400 participants. Results suggest that the original TPB was able to predict commuter' intention to use public transportation with 36% of the variance explained in the bus model and 45% in the train model. Results indicate that attitude, perceived behavioural control (PBC), and subjective norm are found to have positive effects on the behavioural intention of using public transport in the original and the edited TPB models. Furthermore, novelty seeking and external influence also have positive influences on attitude. While the three antecedents of trust were found to have an indirect positive effect on commuters' intention to use public transport via attitude, subjective norm and PBC. Situational factors were found to have an indirect negative significant influence on people's intention to use public transport through perceived behavioural control. After adding the addition TPB constructs and demographic variables, the model accounted for an additional 10% of the variance in intentions for the bus model and 3% for the train model, bringing the total variance accounted for to 46% in the bus model and 48% in the train model. Findings also suggests that the proposed train model had better explanatory power for intention than the bus model, signifying an overall preference of train over bus by commuters in this study. This study has produced useful observations into peoples' behavioural intention to use public transport, and the findings display a relatively good predictive validity.,Ph.D. | - |
