Description: In Malaysia, the application of passive solutions in building for thermal comfort and energy efficiency receives an overwhelming response after the launch of sustainable building rating system, which is known as Green Building Index (GBI) in 2008. This includes indirect green façade (IGF), one type of vertical greenery system (VGS) for an external sun shading device. IGF system is attached to the external building façade which includes a supporting structure such as trellis for the development of the climbing plants. However, the study of IGF system as an effective passive approach is still in infancy stage especially in the climate of tropics, and in the context of Malaysia, specifically. There is an urgent need to establish reliable results from the experiment conducted on the full-scale building in the actual weather conditions of tropical climate. Therefore, this study thoroughly investigated the contribution of shading cooling effect of IGF in modifying microclimate of outdoor and indoor environment of a building. The parameters influenced the performance of cooling effect were evaluated, which then incorporated for the development of prediction model of IGF cooling effect particularly for tropical climate. A comparative analysis from the stationary experimental was applied to investigate the benefit of IGF. Two identical of test cells at Universiti Putra Malaysia were used, with one of the test cells was attached with IGFs at eastern and western façade of bare walls. While, another one was left barely. The experiment was conducted using two species of tropical climbers, which were Thunbergia grandiflora (TG) and Argyreia nervosa (AN). Both climbers were evaluated for 30 days consecutively on 1 to 30 April 2013 and 26 June to 25 July 2013, for TG and AN, respectively. The establishment of the explanatory variables and the prediction model were developed statistically using SPSS. From the results, the IGF is benefited to be applied at both orientations, with more remarkable cooling effect at eastern orientation. Pronounced performances of IGF were observed via cooling effect indicators of external surface temperature (EST), intermediate radiation transmission (IRT), and heat flux transfer (HFT). The maximum cooling effect performance achieved up to 91.5 % reduction, depending on the indicator observed. The benefit of the application of IGF externally can be noticed in the indoor environment as well. The cooling effect on indoor air temperature (INT) and indoor mean radiant temperature (MRT) reduced for 0.8 K diurnally. Nevertheless, the improvement of indoor environment can be enhanced with the application of other passive and active solutions simultaneously. The climatic parameters of ambient air temperature (AAT), ambient relative humidity (ARH), and global solar radiation (GSR) were identified as the most influencing variables (p < 0.05) in regulating the performance of cooling effect. The establishment of cooling effect prediction model of IGF from the multiple regression analysis was also validated. Therefore, the model can be used to predict the benefit of IGF in the tropical climate. The investigation on the performance of IGF cooling effect established reliable data and results for the verification and validation specifically in the tropic regions. The establishment results also help the relevant stakeholders in the construction industry to make better decision to achieve sustainable building environment.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
