Mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a wireless network without the aid of any fixed infrastructure. It can be created, organized, and administered freely and dynamically into arbitrary network topologies. The value of multicasting has recently increased due to the raising importance of group communication applications like video conferencing and online games. Multicasting can significantly enhance the performance of MANETs, the constraint of battery power, and channel capacity. On Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP) is a popular multicast routing protocol designed for ad hoc networks with mobile hosts. Its efficiency, simplicity, and robustness to mobility render it one of the most widely used routing protocols in MANETs. The robustness of ODMRP is achieved via periodic route refreshing. In ODMRP, group membership and multicast mesh are established and updated by the source on fixed refresh intervals and thus such route refresh interval is of the utmost importance to ODMRP’s performance. However, robustness comes at the expense of high control overhead incurred to the network. In this research, an improvement to ODMRP has been proposed with the refresh interval adapted to feedback information from receivers of the multicast group. The proposed scheme is called as Feedback ODMRP (FB-ODMRP) because the refresh interval is adapted based on the information achieved from receivers and such information is fed into the source. ODMRP and one of its recently proposed variants, Quality of Service ODMRP (QoS-ODMRP), are selected and their performance is experimentally compared with proposed FB-ODMRP using the Global Mobile Information System Simulator (GloMoSim). The main contribution of this research is to propose the feedback-based refresh interval mechanism to restrict the number of control packets in original ODMRP. The other contribution is the performance evaluation of FB-ODMRP, ODMRP, and QoS-ODMRP from different perspectives. Simulation results depict that FB-ODMRP incurs less control overhead compared to original ODMRP while maintaining packet delivery ratio comparable that of the original ODMRP.,Master/Sarjana
