Ultrafiltration (UF) is a commonly used membrane process in food technology for separation and concentration. However, membrane fouling is always a major obstacle for the widespread application of membrane. Surface property of membrane is the most important factor in affecting the membrane fouling. Therefore, hydrophilic modification of membrane surface property is a potential method to enhance the functionality of membrane against fouling. Zinc oxide (ZnO) has emerged as one of the highly promising hydrophilic filler in fabricating mixed-matrix-membrane (MMM) due to its low cost, low toxicity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Recent studies have reported that the functionalization of membrane with ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) could concurrently enhancing its permeability and fouling-resistance. Nevertheless, high surface energy of ZnO NPs often resulted in agglomeration, leading to low functional surface area and defective of MMM morphology, which is a conspicuous drawback for its application. Thus, this study was aimed to investigate the effect ZnO-decorated graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite material loaded with different weight percent of ZnO toward polysulfone (PSF) MMM performance enhancement. ZnO-decorated GO nanocomposite material loaded with 1 wt%, 5 wt%, 10 wt%, and 20 wt% ZnO were attempted through sol-gel method. Results showed that, multiple peaks range of X-ray diffraction (XRD) diffraction pattern compared to GO nanosheet diffraction pattern were detected attributed from ZnO NPs has decorated on GO nanosheet. The field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images also showed that ZnO NPs existed on GO nanosheet. It was found that the ZnO-decorated GO nanocomposite material was successfully synthesized. Then, ZnO-decorated GO nanocomposite material was loaded with different ZnO weigh percent was blended with PSF polymer and fabricated through phase inversion method. Membrane characterization results of FESEM, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping, surface roughness, porosity and mean pore radius, contact angle, and zeta potential analysis confirmed that the ZnOdecorated GO nanocomposite material has a great potential for improving PSF MMM performance. Experiment results demonstrated that the PSF/ZnO-GO MMM performances were greatly improved where 10 wt% ZnO loaded into ZnO-decorated GO nanomaterial exhibited the highest permeability (5.35 L/m2 ·h·bar) and BSA retention at all pH state among all fabricated MMM. Additionally, flux recovery ration (FRR) was also dramatically improved attributed to the smoother membrane surface. This work has shown that a well distribution of ZnO incorporated with GO nanosheet as a dispersing agent blended with PSF polymer to form PSF/ZnO-GO MMM, was a promising approach in creating better UF membrane with a better hydrophilicity, permeability, and cleaning efficiency for the used in food industry in future.,Master of Science,Soft copy cannot be uploaded-
