Malaysias climate is categorized as equatorial, being hot and humid throughout the year. Approximately 60% of the total energy consumption of a building in hot and humid climate comes from cooling load. Building insulations played an important role in reducing the heat gain and cooling load of a building. There are various types of building insulations available in the market including attic radiant barriers and reflective insulations. Based on a literature review, there is lack of scientific evidence showing the performance of reflective products especially in hot and humid climatic conditions. Hence, this research seeks to investigate radiant barrier and reflective insulation performance in reducing the heat gain into the indoor building environment. The main objective of this research is to investigate and determine the RSI (Thermal Resistance in SI unit, m2·K/W) and attic air temperature of various types of radiant barriers and reflective insulations under different types of roofs in hot and humid conditions. The research also draws a comparison study between the RSI of radiant barrier with mass insulation and reflective insulation. There were three test cells constructed for this project. The roofs of the test cells were designed so that they can be interchangeably with various roofing materials and insulation materials, radiant barriers or reflective insulations. Thermocouples were installed under the roof, under the insulation material and top of the ceiling to measure their surface temperature. These data were used to calculate the temperature differences across the attic. Heat flux transducers (HFT) were installed on the ceiling of the test cells to measure the heat flux coming through the attic configuration. A data logger was used to record the data at two-minute intervals. The field study consists of seven phases and the key parameters of this project are roof types (concrete tile, clay tile and metal deck), different configurations (25 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm and no air space) and insulation materials (radiant barrier, reflective insulation and mass insulation). The findings from this research will document the RSI for the roof systems with different configuration and insulation materials in hot and humid climate. Measured RSI for typical attic applications of reflective products showed results in the range 2 to 3 m2·K/W. Measured thermal resistances for attics with reflective insulations are higher RSI than mass insulations in the same structure.,“Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis” is not available,Master of Science-
