River pollution which is a type of man-made disaster in Malaysia and other countries of the world has been worsened over the years. The non-holistic structural measures to reduce river basin pollution must be well understood before any improvement or remediation programme could be planned or implemented accordingly. River water quality modeling has been demonstrated by many researchers to be an effective tool in helping decision makers developed reliable water quality simulation programmes along a particular river. A similar procedure was planned and implemented in this thesis. The main objective of this research was to develop a river hydrodynamic model covering the main area of the Sungai Kuyoh, and then followed by the development of water quality model. The subcatchment area of Sungai Kuyoh was selected in this study as part initiative in implementing the Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM) programme in Malaysia. The Sungai Kuyoh is one of the tributaries of Sungai Klang which has been classified as a polluted river, with a water quality classification of Class III to IV. The main river of Sungai Kuyoh subcatchment is about 8.4 km in length with an area of about 24.1 km2. The Sungai Kuyoh subcatchment has been identified as having adequate and suitable information to enable good implementation of the intended research in this thesis. The important input parameters of the proposed model in this study were data about river cross section, river discharge, water quality, landuse and several other relevant activities in the catchment. GIS interface was applied in analyses of landuse activities as well as in estimating discharges that were generated from those types of land use. The catchment was divided into six zones and nineteen sub-zones. The tributaries were modelled as pollution inputs from the subzones. Calibrations were carried out at upstream and midstream portions of the river. The trend of pollution from model simulation was then compared with observed data. An analysis of water quality parameters to examine the extent of pollution was carried out in five zones. The results of the simulation exercise with some degree of water quality improvement for Sungai Anak Kuyoh (Zone 2) and Sungai Jinma (Zone 5) and these have resulted in improvement of the Sungai Kuyoh water quality from being a Class IV to a Class III. The highest Total Maximum Daily Load was contributed by Zone 2 (Sungai Anak Kuyoh) with a BOD total load of 702 kg/day, COD of 2460 kg/day, TSS of 1167 kg/day and AN of 254 kg/day. The water quality model that was developed was found to be a useful tool in assisting decision makers in important government agencies of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) such as DID, and DOE, and Ministry of Housing and Local Government (MHLG) and state agencies such as the local authorities, to plan and implement effectively the infrastructure and physical development projects within the Sungai Kuyoh sub catchment area.,Master/Sarjana
