dc.descriptionThis study sets out to investigate the educational use of digital storytelling (DST) in fostering the development of 21st century skills among undergraduates within second language learning context. DST is a relatively new educational innovation, which combines the art of storytelling with a variety of digital audio, video and multimedia images. As reported in the literature, DST is recognized for its effectiveness in infusing ICT literacy, inventive thinking and problem solving skills among students through their involvement in simulated working environment. However, the extent that DST benefits students is rarely explored in the Asian contexts, particularly in Malaysia. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap in knowledge by exploring the use of DST on 198 students undertaking an English for Academic Purpose (EAP) course at the National University of Malaysia . The study attempts to explore students' utilisation of various set of skills in the process of developing their digital stories based on a 21st century skills framework adopted from enGauge (2003) and the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (2006). Using the case study approach, a questionnaire and focus group interview were used to elicit data. The quantitative data gathered from the questionnaire was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 17 and the qualitative data was analysed based on the predetermined themes from the 21st century skills framework. The findings suggest that in general, despite the demanding nature of DST, students seemed to be receptive towards the innovation. They had developed their own digital stories in a group with minimal help from the instructors. It had enabled students to exercise their critical thinking skills and expose them to the collaborative working environment. The findings also revealed that the main challenges students faced were related to difficulties in working in group and technical problems such as software incompatibility and slow Internet connectivity. The implication of this study is that UKM students are ready for more creative and innovative ways of learning involving the use of technology to meet the needs of the 21st century.,Master / Sarjana
