This study investigates workplace writing practices of Malaysian Chinese academicians of a private college. The objectives of this study are to identify the writing practices of academicians, the obstacles they face and to identify the type of assistance they require to facilitate their writing in English at the workplace. A mixed-method research utilizing a questionnaire and interview was employed. Thirty-five academicians responded to the questionnaire and fifteen academicians were interviewed. A number of significant findings emerged for this group of academicians. Firstly, the three most important and frequently written documents are e-mails, assignment briefs and lesson plans. Secondly, the three most difficult to write documents for the academicians are lesson plans, speeches and reports. Their difficulties in writing in English language are due to their inadequate knowledge of the English language. Thirdly, checking of grammar, planning, revising content, editing, checking of appropriate usage of words, checking of spelling, and organizing paragraphs are the eight writing skills they deem important in workplace writing. Finally, they would appreciate user-friendly writing software, which is voice automated with proofreading support that contains templates, words and sentence choices according to genre, as well as, translation features to facilitate their writing. There are two implications of this study concerning the academicians' perspective in writing. Firstly, the administrators of the college should provide relevant training to facilitate the documenting and archiving of their workplace writing. Secondly, customized software which is tailored for the academicians writing needs should be developed.,Master of Philosophy
