Description: Environmental researchers have indicated that traffic noise is a major pollutant in urban environment. Government authorities are always challenged by the increasing growth rate of vehicle production, and in turn by the increasing demands for new highway construction which are moving near the residential areas. However, this matter has raised government concerns, and they have selected and applied noise barriers as an option for decreasing traffic noise complaints. The reviewed literatures indicated that traffic noise is reduced effectively with utilizing special barriers; however, the line of sight between the source and the receivers is only broken when the barrier height is designed high enough and long enough. This study attempts to determine the effectiveness of traffic noise barrier, how the public perceive the effectiveness of the noise barrier in reducing traffic noise, to evaluate level of noise pollution experienced and exposure to the community affected by these urban highways and to study the public degree of tolerance and awareness to highway noise considering their age, gender or level of education. In one hour continuously monitored, noise level data were collected during the observation time at two locations at the barrier; the first reading collected before barrier and the second one after barrier, meanwhile the questionnaire survey have been conducted to explore residents opinion about noise barrier effectiveness. In Malaysia different noise barriers have been constructed; and thus, to evaluate their affectivity, Sunway residential area along LDP, Jalan SS 4d/10 Ss 4 Petaling Jaya and Taman Permata along MRR2 have been chosen for a comprehensive study. This study has achieved its main objectives and has been able to prove that the noise barrier is effective in reduction of traffic noise. Based on observation results, the aluminum noise barrier in Taman Permata surrounded with the green belt is the best barrier in reducing traffic noise level complying with the recommended guidelines. According to Statistical analyses results, noise barriers in all three sites are effective in reducing traffic noise during day-time and night-time with a statistically significant decrease. Based on the results derived from analysis the questionnaire survey that was collected from urban dwellers from three study sites, The residents agreed that the noise barrier used is effective in reducing the highway noise; however the respondents from Jalan SS 4d/10 Ss 4 were not seemed satisfied about that. Also it can be concluded that different range of age groups, have the same idea about negative effects of noise barrier for all three study sites also respondents with different level of education have the same idea about negative effects of noise barrier, but in Sunway area and Jalan SS/4d Ss4, residents with different gender, have the same idea about negative effects of noise barrier. Also results shows that residents of the study areas suffer high level of noise in the morning and evening during the weekdays, however during the weekend on Saturday and Sunday noise from highway is much less.,Master/Sarjana
