Authors: Christopher Catherine
Keywords: Biography as a literary form
Chinese American -- California -- Biography
Women physicians -- California -- Biography
Issue Date: 2004
Description: This is a study on the dual ideologies operating in Adeline Mah's autobiography, Falling Leawes. In order to portray the working of ideology, the text will be analysed in relation to Althusser's theory of ideology and Macherey's theory of textual absences. The researcher hctions to take on the role of a close reader to examine the highlights and glosses in the text in order to reveal the dual ideologies at work. It has come to the researcher's attention that there is a comfortable amalgation between the Chinese and American ideologies in the text and in the life of the writer. The study also functions to provide a reading of a contemporary and recent autobiography of a Chinese-American, besides offering new insights into the Chinese-American experience. Adeline Mah takes the position of the ideal Chinese-American writer as her writings straddle both the early and contemporary writings. This only indicates that the writer is comfortable with her position and takes on the responsibility to bridge the cultural gap between the East and West,Master of Arts
