dc.description | Ability to play is an important skill to have in the development of a child. Most researches have proven that ability to play influence the development of cognitive, language and social abilities in children. It is acknowledged that the relationship between play and language have significant associations in children's overall development. The fact that play development and language development do follow a predictable sequence in child development, therefore it is important to understand the correlation between these two factors in order to predict the potential of language delay in order to enhance the diagnostic process for children at risk of speech and language difficulties. 20 normal typicallydeveloping subjects who are native speakers of Malaysian Chinese English-speaking aged between 7 to 36 months were selected to participate in this study. English was the main language used at home. Data collection was carried out in the children's homes. Five sets of toys (tea set, doll set, colourful blocks, crayons, papers, rattles and puzzles) were presented to the children during play. Parents were instructed to let their child play with the toys provided. The sessions averaged 30 minutes and were video recorded. As the child played with the toys, their play behaviours were coded using the Developmental Assessment of Play (Casby, 2003). The children's conversation or language use during play were transribed and coded in the language profile i.e. Language Assessment Remediaton Procedures (LARSP) by Crystal (1983). The findings showed that positive correlations were shown in all play stages starting from stage 3 LARSP with r = 0. 0.685, r = 0.723, r = 0.709. The results also showed that when play level increased, subjects' sentence combination increased too.
