dc.description | The current study investigates the psychometric properties and initial normative data of the Malay Preschool Language Assessment Tool (MPLAT), a standardized norm referenced language assessment tool for Malay preschoolers whose native language is Malay. A total of 300 participants in six monthly age groups from 4.0 – 6.11 years old were assessed using the MPLAT to determine initial normative data. Participants were randomly selected from preschools in Kelantan, Malaysia. A total of 36 participants were retested after 14 days to determine temporal stability and 12 participants were retested by a different evaluator after 14 days to determine inter – rater reliability. The current study suggests that the MPLAT meets the psychometric requirements for a valid and reliable assessment tool, with a high test-retest reliability of rho = .996 (p < 0.01) and an inter-rater reliability of rho = 1.000. Findings suggest that the construct validity is high as evidenced by the strong correlation of r = .949 for the relationship between test score and age of participants, validating the construct that the MPLAT is developmental in nature. Total scores for the MPLAT and for all six subtests show a gradual increase with age. There is also moderate to strong positive correlation between each subtest and the test total, as well as between one subtest and another subtest. Language development among the preschoolers is discussed in relation to their performance on the MPLAT. Dialectal variation of participants' responses observed during the administration of MPLAT is discussed. The MPLAT has the potential to be a useful clinical and research tool among Malay speaking children,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available | - |
