Description: | Most studies agree that parental training program promote the well-being of caregivers and children with disabilities. It is important to suit the design of the educational module into the local context targeting specific population. Therefore, the main objective of this three phases study is to develop and examine the effect of parental educational module for caregivers of individual with learning disabilities (LD). In the first phase, the coping skill, psychosocial adjustment and parental stress of caregivers having children with LD were investigated. The association between level of stress among caregivers and motor performance of their child were also determined. A total of 137 caregivers of individual with LD completed the Family Crisis Oriented Personal Evaluation Scale (F-COPES), Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale-Self Report (PAIS-SR), Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF) and a brief demographic questionnaire. Motor performances of their children with LD were assessed using Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2 (MABC-2). Result reveals that 115(83%) of the caregivers have a high level of stress and 108 (85%) of the children with LD having a significant movement difficulty. The levels of parental stress of caregivers raising a child with LD are negatively correlated to their child motor performance, rs (135) = -0.236, p=0.01. Findings from the first phase was utilised in the development of the parental educational module which was further refined through caregivers and expert focus group discussions (FGD). Ten parents and six expert panels participated in two separate FGDs. Thematic content analysis of FGDs transcripts highlighted three main themes in development of parental education module for caregivers of individuals with LD: i) Objective ii) Content iii) Structure. In the third phase, the effectiveness of parental education module among caregivers of children with LD was determined using experimental (n=19) and control group (n=25) approach. The results of eight session interventions showed that coping strategies, psychosocial adjustment and parental stress of the caregivers improved significantly after attending the educational module program. Thus, the newly developed parental educational module is effective in improving the coping skills, psychosocial adjustment and stress level among caregivers of children with LD.,Master of Health Sciences |
