Title: The use of open and closed stance forehand strokes in tennis: a comparative study on skills acquisition among intermediate tennis players

Description: The current research intends to examine and compare the effectiveness of open and closed stance forehand strokes in tennis, and also to determine whether there is a relationship between the open and closed stance forehand in terms of percentage of success and accuracy level. The methodology of this study includes a testing procedure, demographic data, test of percentage of successes and level of accuracy, and statistical analysis. The participants consisted of 32 males and 32 females who ranged from 18 to 25 years old and who were learning the sport of tennis at the Enghelab Sport Complex located in Tehran, Iran. In order to measure and compare the percentage of success and the level of accuracy, the participants were categorised into two groups, namely the open stance forehand group’ and the closed stance forehand group’. The result shows that in the open stance forehand group the average of success for females was 33.66 while for males it was 52.02.In the closed stance forehand group the total accuracy for females was 12.21which was significantly lower than for males at 14.84. This is lead to the closed stance forehand is more accurate than the open stance forehand. This is probably due to the correct forehand techniques used by the intermediate in the closed stance forehand group or probably it is easier to handle high and fast balls. In addition, this study also showed the accuracy level for the male intermediate was average, while the female intermediate demonstrated a need for improvement in accuracy.
