dc.descriptionHaving conversational fluency includes having the ability to engage in culture-appropriate and effective communications in social context, however developing the ability it can be a challenge in the Malaysian language classroom. Fortunately, borderless international communication through online platforms such as massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) was made possible that gave birth to global online communities. This ethnographic case study aimed to explore Malaysian learners’ L2 socialization experiences while participating in an English-speaking online community of a MMORPG. It was found that the participants’ L2 socialization experiences were constant processes of self-discovery and identity negotiation in developing sociolinguistic competence through participation and exposure to language-mediated social interactions and gaming practices. The participants learn to participate successfully in the discourse and gaming practices of the MMORPG community by playing agentive roles in their process of L2 socialization; which pattern observed were resistance, initiative, and negotiation. Additionally, as their relationship and engagement with other players grow, so does their communicative ability and sociolinguistic competence. Furthermore, the participants’ interaction with the community facilitated the process of gaining expertise in the discourse and practices of the community by observation of the overt display of conduct, scaffolding through live coaching and narratives, as well as collective reflection with other community members. The findings adds additional support for the SCT and L2 socialization theory and led to the pedagogical implications of adult language training, where the teaching of appropriate language models according to situational contingencies would empower them to implement decision-making in being appropriate and strategic in social context.
