Description: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of cooperative learning in improving English as a second language (ESL) speaking performance of undergraduate students at a local, public university. In addition, this study investigated the students’ perceptions of cooperative learning and any problems that the students faced when working in groups. This study utilized a quasi-experimental research design. The respondents comprised 60 first semester undergraduate students from two different faculties in a local, public university. Cooperative learning lessons were implemented on the training group (CL group, n=31), while the comparison group (n = 29) was taught by using the traditional learning method. Three instruments were used to collect data. The first instrument was pre-and post-speaking tests. The respondents from both groups were tested before and after they received the speaking lessons. The data from the speaking tests were analysed using a t-test to determine any significant difference between both groups. The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in that the CL group scored higher (t = 6.403, df =28 and 2-tailed value = 0.000) in the post speaking test compared to the comparison group. For the second instrument, respondents from the CL group were given a set of questionnaire to investigate their perceptions on cooperative learning. Data from the questionnaire indicated positive feedback from the respondents. Five respondents from the CL group were interviewed to examine their perceptions and any problems that they faced within their group. The research findings showed that cooperative learning seemed to be a preferred method of teaching speaking. It can be concluded that cooperative learning is a viable and effective approach in the pedagogy of ESL speaking.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
