dc.description | The main objective of this study is to explore the level of interaction and religious harmony between Muslims and Buddhists community in Chittagong Hill Tracts Bangladesh, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic yet Muslim majority country in South Asia, on the basis of a sample survey conducted in Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. The methodology applied in the study was both quantitative and qualitative. Using random sampling, a number of 477 respondents (260 Muslims and 217 Buddhists) were secured from a total of 600 questionnaires distributed to the two communities in Chittagong Hill Tracts in 2016. Based on feedback from the respondents, the data were analyzed critically and presented statistically using SPSS 22.0. There were claims that the minorities were persecuted, neglected, deprived and tortured by the majority. However, this study found that such claim cannot be supported. In general, 83.2% Muslims and 81% Buddhist agreed that there is peaceful religious harmony between the two communities in terms of recognition and tolerance, mutual understanding and co- operation, equality and mutual benefit, willingness to work for the common good, agreement on non-violence and peaceful existence. In addition, the study has also explored the reasons put forward by the remaining small percentage of respondents (approximately 10%) who felt that there is no peaceful religious interaction between the two communities. Among the reasons are lack of knowledge about religion and religious teachings, national and international political views on religion and religious adherents as well as politicians using religion for political gain. The results show religious harmony between Muslims and Buddhists that bind people together. On the other hand, the discouraging factor of interaction among the residents of Chittagong Hill Tracts was that trivial issues of religious differences. Therefore, the significance of the study lies mainly in showing the level of interaction between Muslims and Buddhists in Chittagong Hill Tracts. This result is essential to the policymakers to develop a better pattern of inter-racial interaction in a remote area of Bangladesh. The study finally discusses the need for broader and more comprehensive research in this area.,“Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis” is not available,Master of Islamic Studies | |
