dc.description | Increasing car ownership and use has generally proved unfavourable for bus operation, particularly, with increasing road congestion and poor bus reliability while has led people to purchase and use cars instead of buses. Buses are often the most widely used mode of transport today because bus networks are easily accessible and cheaper than other types of public transportation. This study was carried out to provide a timetable schedule with consideration of the influencing parameters in bus operation. Forecasting effective parameters is the heart of the bus scheduling model. The most commonly used approach to prepare a bus scheduling model is the balance between demand of passengers, fleet size, headway, dwell time, running time and traffic lanes. Three bus composition scenarios were simulated. In this study, an object oriented program, Microsoft Office Excel indexed by Visual Basic, was chosen to design the scheduling model to calculate the best timetable for bus operation. This scheduling model was constructed based on reduction in delay of bus operation. Relevant information, such as number of passengers, fleet size and network configuration, were obtained from the Tehran Municipality, Fara Tarabar Mahdi Bus Company, United Bus Company of Tehran, site observation and questionnaire studies. This model has provided better scheduling with minimized delays for buses and was increased reliability of trip time for passengers. Results were validated by comparing with actual and virtual bus operation, through, a case study based on an actual public bus operation in Tehran, Iran. The results shows that various scenarios of bus composition have indicated reasonable R2 of 0.9909 and 0.9905 for morning and evening rush traffic period for three various scenarios, respectively. This indicates that the model developed in the present study is a reliable and suitable tool to guide Bus Companies to prepare bus schedules with high reliability.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available | - |
