dc.description | This study aims to compare the endodontic practice performed by Malaysian general dental practitioners (GDPs) and specialists. In this cross-sectional study, selfadministered questionnaires were distributed to a random sample of 566 GDPs, 22 restorative specialists and 16 endodontists. Questionnaire consisted of items on endodontic practice and endodontic referral reasons. It was pretested and validated before distribution. The response rate was 73.8%, consisting of 418 GDPs and 28 specialists. Sixty six percent of GDPs worked in the government sector, while half of the specialists worked in academic institutions. Significant difference in endodontic practice could be observed between specialists and GDPs in the use of operating microscope [specialist, 53.6% (n = 15); GDPs, 1.2% (n = 5), P <0.001], electronic apex locator [specialist, 100% (n = 28); GDPs, 54.5% (n = 228), P <0.001], rubber dam isolation [specialists, 100% (n = 28); GDPs, 20.1% (n = 84), P <0.001], rotary files [specialists, 92.9% (n = 26); GDPs, 23.4% (n = 98), P <0.001] and sodium hypochlorite as irrigant [specialist, 100% (n = 28); GDPs, 58.1% (n = 243), P <0.001]. The primary reason GDPs referred endodontic case was to get second opinion (44%, n = 184), followed by calcified or blocked canals (27.8%, n = 116) and treatment of tooth with unusual anatomy (27.3%, n = 114). This study indicated that specialists use instruments and equipment following quality guidelines for endodontic treatment, while GDPs do not always conform. Standard of practice for endodontics should be improved by increasing the awareness level.,Doctor of Clinical Dentistry Endodontology | |
