dc.descriptionRecognising the challenges faced by children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) while performing and accessing dental care, more teledentistry applications have been developed to benefit the children and their parents/caregivers. However, available applications may not be appropriately validated to meet the children's needs and/or fulfil their caregivers' expectations. The objective of this study is to develop an oral health care application using progressive web application (PWA) and validate its contents suitability and usability among parents. The study included: (i) extensive literature reviews on parents/caregivers' perceptions on barriers and facilitators of accessing oral health care services and the available special techniques in dental management of children with ASD as the core for our application, and (ii) development of application and validation by health and education professionals as content experts and parents as users, respectively. Six dental specialists and an educator/website designer rated the relevance and suitability of application contents while parents of children with/without ASD were invited to rate their acceptance and usability of application using the Acceptance and User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). Our study found substantial good quality literature on caregivers' perceived barriers/facilitators including their limited oral health care knowledge and limited access/options to trained dental professionals/services, and behavioural modification via use of familiarization program and Visual pedagogy as effective techniques to improve childrens management in dental settings. This evidence provided a strong basis for the needs and contents of our new 52-items PWA application. The validation among experts showed high content validity where majority of the items were considered very relevant (43, 83.7%), some as relevant (8, 15.4%) and one needs revision (.09%). Meanwhile, the overall satisfaction on the application is 95% for both ASD and Non-ASD parents. The overall mean of the 26 items of the UEQ for both ASD and Non-ASD group is positive. In conclusion, our newly developed PWA-based oral health application for children with ASD received high suitability and relevance rate, and high acceptance and positive usability response from parents of both groups.
