dc.descriptionSodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) are common endodontic irrigants but possess many drawbacks including cytotoxicity and inefficient smear layer removal whilst EDTA is solely incapable of root canal disinfection. This study was aimed to determine the effects of several irrigants on dentin microhardness and smear layer removal compared to NaOCl and EDTA. Eighty-four extracted human mandibular premolar teeth were used. After specific sample preparation, twenty root halves were allocated to each group according to the irrigants used: Group 1:2.5% NaOCl, Group 2: 17% EDTA, Group 3: 0.9% normal saline, Group 4: 2.5% Orthosiphon stamineus, Group 5: 0.05% Syzygium aromaticum and Group 6: 0.5% Zingiber officinale roscoe. Each sample was subjected under the Vickers Microhardness Tester (50 g load for 10 seconds) before and after immersion in selected irrigant, measured in Vickers Hardness Number (VHN). Evaluation of smear layer in the coronal, middle and apical thirds for 8 root halves in each group under field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Paired t-test, mixed ANOVA with post hoc Tukey’s HSD test for dentin microhardness and Kruskal- Wallis and Mann-Whitney U post hoc test for smear layer data analysis. All groups showed significant change in dentin microhardness (with the highest mean reduction in Z. officinale group) but the changes were statistically not significant when compared between groups (Tukey’s HSD post hoc test p > 0.05). All groups showed effective smear layer removal with S. aromaticum having the lowest mean rank score in coronal, middle and apical respectively (20.00, 19.13 and 17.00). No significant difference was found when smear layer removal was compared between natural products against NaOCl and EDTA (Mann-Whitney post hoc test p > 0.05). Natural product irrigants demonstrated excellent capability in removing smear layer whilst maintaining comparably unremarkable dentin microhardness reduction to be considered as a potential alternative root canal irrigant.,Ijazah Doktor Pergigian Klinikal
