dc.description | Physico-chemical properties of soil samples obtained from Durian (Haplic Acrisol (siltic), Holyrood (Haplic Acrisol (alumic) ), Rengam (Haplic Nitisols (dystric) ), Segamat (Acric Ferralsols (rhodic) ) and Selangor (Haplic Gleysols (dystric,clayic,drainic) ) in Malaysia has been evaluated. The sorption and stability of 226Ra 137Cs in the soil subsurface were studied to provide detailed information on the health related risks of radionuclides using three different depths (0-20 cm, 20-40 cm and 40-60 cm). The distribution coefficients (Kd-values) for 226Ra and 137Cs were determined using standard batch tests and the 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K activity concentration were measured. 238U and 232Th concentrations were determined using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and gamma spectrometry technique. The mean activity concentrations of 226Ra in the soil samples were calculated. The Kd of the soil samples were explained based on their physico-chemical and mineralogical properties. The results showed that all the soils exhibited acidic pH values and were attributed to the high organic matter content (OM) in all soil samples. The cation exchange capacity (CEC) of all soil samples was determined. Different free iron oxides (Fe3O2) and manganese (MnO2) content (μg g-1) was obtained for each soil sample. The sulphate content of the soil varied with respect to the soil depth. Kaolinite and illite were the common clay minerals found in different soil samples. The mean distribution coefficients value for 137Cs and 226Ra in the soil samples was obtained. Multiple regression analysis of the soil samples from Durian and Holyrood showed that the clay content was the predictive parameter that influence 137Cs Kd-values (R2 = 89.8 % and 99.6 %, P< 0.001). The physico-chemical soil parameters of soil samples from Rengam, Segamat and Selangor greatly influences 137Cs Kd-values, the sulphate content of the OM; base saturation; CEC and MnO2. Result showed that the 226Ra Kd-values obtained from Durian, Holyrood and Rengam soil samples have high sand; pH and sulphate (So42-) however; sand was the key soil properties that influence the Kd value. Multiple regression analysis predicted that the most important independent variables influencing 226Ra Kd-values of Selangor soil samples were organic matter (OM) and cation exchange capacity (CEC). The research findings showed that the physicochemical properties of the five soil samples were dissimilar and are an important determinant of soil usage. It then becomes important that soil properties that influence the sorption of contaminants such as 226Ra and 137Cs should be determined prior to the establishment of nuclear waste disposal sites by the approved authorities in Malaysia,Ph.D | - |
