Food waste generation has continued to increase in recent years in Malaysia. According to the National Sold Waste Department Malaysia (NSWD) food waste has outstripped other solid waste generated in Malaysia constituting more than 40 percent of the total waste disposed in 2010. From the data, food waste disposed from households was more than others sources. Its existence in the waste stream can always contaminate and complicate any effort to recover and recycle of other dry wastes. Its environmental impacts are many, includingdecreasing of water sources, cause climate change and harm human health when disposed inopen dumped fieldlandfill as well as affect food security. Therefore, the study aims to investigate the current status of food waste managementin Malaysia. Purposive sampling method was applied to collect primary data through structured questionnaire from a total of 333 respondents, 257 respondents were from Selangor, representing developed state, and 76 from Terengganu, representing under developed state. To achieve the aims and objectives, this study applied descriptive statistical analysis, structural equation model (SEM) and logistic regression model analysis. Findings show most frequent type of food wastes disposed from Selangor households is rice at (19.1 percent) while Terengganu households disposed (9 percent) of same food quantities. Total food waste disposed per week in kg in Selangor ranged from 3-6kg from (31.1 percent)respondents and (22.4 percent) for same quantities of waste by Terengganu households.Further findings of the study from the structural equation model (SEM) showed that government policy on food waste reduction, environmental knowledge, household environmental awareness, reducing food waste generation, educational qualification havesignificant impacts on the reduction of food waste generation towards achieving sustainable food waste management.Furthermore, findings from the SEM were in tandem with the qualitative resultsof the respondent's opinion on the need for environmental awareness program and provision of facilities to motivate food waste reduction. The implication of the findings leads to the conclusion that sustainable food waste management is not only a behavioural issues, but rather policy and regulations problems. The findings suggested thegovernment shouldhave strong and important role to play by formulating food waste policies and provisions of facilities that would lead to reducing food waste at households and at the same time creating awareness of the impact of food waste on the natural environment and the economy as well.,'Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis' is not available,Ph.D.-
