Transitions outcomes include engagement in post-secondary education, getting a job, maintaining a home, having satisfactory personal and social relationship and involvement in the community. This study aims to investigate the transition experiences of young adults with specific learning disabilities who had attended Special Education Programs in the government schools in Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory and the State of Selangor, Malaysia. The main objectives of this study are to examine their engagement characteristics in post-secondary education, employment, and social-interpersonal and leisure participation as well the personal, family and community factors associated with these outcomes. Data collection was done in two phases, qualitative followed by the quantitative phase. Information from in-depth interviews of 8 young adults, 12 parents and 5 special education teachers was utilised in the development of the questionnaire which was used for surveying 90 young adults in the quantitative phase. The qualitative findings showed the young adults interviewed in this study had engaged in similar transition outcomes often conceptualized in the international transition literature. Their engagement in the explored outcomes seemed to be influenced by their personal attributes, family support and involvement, and support services received from the community. Based on the Wechsler's Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence assessment, analysis of 77 respondents from the quantitative survey whose IQ score were 70 and above showed that 33.8% of the young adults were engaged in post-secondary education, 64.9% were employed, and 37.7% reported social-interpersonal engagement and leisure participation. Of those who engaged in these outcomes, 88.5% reported being satisfied in their post-secondary education, 64.9% for employment, and 57.1% for social-interpersonal and leisure participation. They faced barriers/problems that include memory problems, slow cognitive processing, lack of academic, work and social skills, low self-confidence, financially insufficient, and being marginalised by society. Statistical analysis showed significant associations between some individual, family and community factors and engagement in the studied transition outcomes. This study provides knowledge on transition outcomes experienced by Malaysian young adults with specific learning disabilities. The findings highlighted the need for improvement in the current transition services at both secondary and post-secondary school levels especially on the modifiable factors, transition services that include type of curriculum studied, social & living skill training, vocational training & employment related services receiving, financial support, and academic accommodation/support were found significantly associated with the transition outcomes studied. There is a need to develop more systematic way of providing post-secondary education/training and adults support services, to increase community awareness and understanding of this group of people, and to empower the young adults with specific learning disabilities so that they are better prepared for the transition to adult life.,PhD-
