Description: | Urban poverty has become a major issue of global concern. As other countries continue to register sustainable economic growth, Africa especially Nigeria is not only lagging behind but is trapped in a vicious circle of borrowing and donor dependency syndrome. This study aims to examine issues, constraints, and vulnerability of urban poverty in relation to sustainable livelihood in Lagos, Nigeria. The main objective is to explore current status and causes of urban poverty in Lagos, Nigeria, to examine the relationship between the urban poor and some factors affecting their sustainable livelihood (vulnerability and resilience) and to formulate recommendations and guidelines that can be used in policy and decision making process. A total of 262 households were selected through purposive random sampling design. Descriptive analysis was used to examine the characteristics of the households and simple regression model, t-test and the one way ANOVA (analysis of variance) were used to examine the mean difference between some social economic characteristics of the urban poor and factors affecting their sustainable livelihood (vulnerability and resilience). The findings indicate, the poverty status of household was (86.69%) three years ago but was reduced to (68.95%) in the year 2010. The study found that there is no difference in the level of vulnerability to poverty between non educated and postgraduate (post graduate diploma students, master degree and PhD holders) respondents, there is also no difference in the level of vulnerability to poverty between the male and female respondents. The study also found that there is no difference in the level of resilience to poverty between male and female respondents, there is no difference in the level of resilience to poverty between married and divorced respondents but there is a significant difference in resilience to poverty between married and single respondents. Finally there is no difference in level of resilience to poverty between respondents in the age bracket (10-20) years and (41-50) years. Reducing poverty is the highest goal of priority of respondents, availability of manpower is the greatest vulnerability that disturbs livelihood goal of respondents and respondents are more resilient politically. The policy recommendations for this study, include improving the asset base of the urban poor, redistribution of income, creating sustained community base social protection , improved quality of life, consistency in pro-poor poverty alleviation programs without policy switches, good planning, implementation and monitoring process of urban poverty alleviation programs, effective delivery mechanism and good urban governance.,PhD |
