dc.description | Bangladesh is facing energy poverty and environmental degradation from the unsustainable energy utilization. The wider use of renewable energy could be the solution for sustainable development. Although various researchers suggested renewable energy technology as the alternative, there is little evidence on the effectiveness of it in eradicating energy poverty in rural areas. Also, there is a dearth of literature found in the factors influencing energy poverty and the factors for which people buy renewable energy technology, especially in Bangladesh. This research undertook three objectives, where it aimed to measure the determinants of energy poverty; to examine the impacts of renewable energy technology on energy poverty reduction, the creation of livelihood assets and improved livelihood among rural users; and to determine the factors influencing purchase intention of renewable energy technology by rural non-users in Bangladesh. This study utilized the quantitative method developed from empirically tested models derived from existing theory and massive literature review relevant to it. The study collected primary data using a stratified random sampling method through a structured questionnaire carried out for three months in two phases on 685 respondents from rural areas in Rajshahi division in Bangladesh. Among the total respondents, 135 respondents were used for exploratory analysis, refining measurement instruments and 550 respondents were utilized for confirmatory and structural analysis to test the hypothesis using Structural Equation Modeling through Smart Partial Least Square 2 and Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) 20 software. The results of the study indicated that 53.2% of the respondents on an average are categorized as energy poor in the studied areas. The use of renewable energy technology had reduced energy poverty by the average of 73.0% of users; improved the energy poverty status from extremely poor and poor to extreme non-poor and non-poor status. The structural model of the impact of renewable energy technology showed positive results on livelihood assets and overall improvement of household livelihoods, in which social assets were found predominantly. The structural model of the determinants of energy poverty confirmed that individual responsiveness to alternatives, the perception of the alternatives and socio-economic factors were the significant factors where socio-economic factors were marked moderately mediated by the other factors. Furthermore, the attitude, perceived cost, perceived usefulness, perceived behavioral control and knowledge were found significantly and directly related to purchase intention except for social influence, while perceived ease of use was indirectly related via attitude and perceived usefulness in the purchase intention model. This research contributes to the existing knowledge by providing models and new constructs with related measurement scales that will expand further researches. As implication, this study recommends policy makers to integrate renewable energy technology with their national poverty alleviation program, while both the managerial authorities and policy makers, need to take necessary steps to bring refinement and/or innovation in the technology and should foster expansion of it through massive promotional measures, building awareness and reducing price of product and technology from the perspectives of energy suppliers and Government.,“Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis” is not available,Ph.D. | |
