dc.descriptionThe main objective of the study was to examine the impact of personal-level qualities Managerial Business Ties (MBT) and Managerial Government Ties (MGT) on performance; together, how the relationship is mediated by Opportunity Capture (OC) whilst moderated by organizational-level qualities as Dynamic Capabilities (DC). The research model was built upon resource-based view (RBV), dynamic capabilities view (DCV) and network theory (NT). Hence it aimed to contribute to these theoretical perspectives through connecting each one with another through a research model. A deductive quantitative approach was used to achieve study objectives through six research questions and thirteen hypotheses. A stratified sampling method was applied in four regions of Kazakhstan to construct the sampling frame. A survey study was conducted among 251 top managers of SMEs in Kazakhstan. Partial Least Squares (PLS) Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to assess the measurement model and confirm the research model. Statistical analysis revealed that 6 hypotheses were supported, 5 hypotheses were not supported, 2 relationships were significant, but hypotheses were not supported. Statistical analysis showed that opportunity capture significantly mediates the relationship between managerial business ties and firm performance. However, a similar mediating effect was not found for MGT. Rather MGT directly influence firm performance. Finally, it was found that dynamic capabilities do not moderate both MBT-OC and MGT-OC link but positively affect opportunity capture and firm performance. From a theoretical perspective, findings reveal that each dimension of managerial ties differently influence firm action and performance. In particular, we argue that market-oriented relationships, which generally refers to MBT, are more functional for market-oriented action such as OC. Besides, bureaucracyoriented relationships, which generally refers to MGT, are more useful to create a protective shield for firms. Moreover, the study documents the direct and indirect effect of dynamic capabilities on firm performance. Hence, this study contributes to the underlying theories as well as suggests some practical contributions. In particular, the study is important in terms of understanding the different effects of two types of managerial ties and dynamic capabilities directly or via OC. Besides practical implications might address the successful execution of captured opportunities, before and after the investment.,Ph.D
