Description: | The purpose of this study is to understand the process and strategies of the development of transformative social service of organizations, which refers to the highly impactful social innovations that are developed and diffused by organizations. Social innovation refers to new ideas that are aimed at meeting social goals, and typically mobilized by socially-innovative organizations as the vehicles to drive social and economic development. It is imperative to understand the nature of social innovation as well as the organizations that develop and diffuse it, as there are increasing demands for alternative types of corporations and organizations that can significantly contribute toward improving the well-being of the society, especially in today’s volatile world that is plagued by alarming social and economic problems. In particular, little is known about how social innovations develop within these organizations. Using the integrated perspectives of innovation, organization theory (OT) and service, this qualitative case study investigated four established organizations that offered transformative social service. Data were collected through in depth interviews of key people of the selected organizations, extensive analyses of documents as well as through observation. The study found that the process of development of transformative social service of organizations was characterized by the complexity and long process of development, as well as other internal and external factors that influence its development. This study enriched the extant discussions on social-service innovation process by identifying an additional ‘pre-ideation stage’ of social innovation, and extended the concept of utility of innovation by suggesting the multiplying effects of social service’s utility that leads to societal impact. The findings of the cases also enriched the literature on service management by incorporating the processual aspect of change and specifying the dimensions of transformative service as process and outcome dimensions, as well as highlighting the roles of both internal and external organizational change agents at major phases of the change process. This study also bridged the theoretical gap by linking the concept of innovation to social venture development and generated a more holistic conceptualization of well-being founded on values and competencies. The extended understanding about the development of transformative social service of organizations also helped to overcome managerial and policy issues of promoting effective management and institutionalization of social-based organizations. In particular, it is suggested for a social intervention to be focused on concerted effort at developing the values and competencies of individuals that would contribute toward the development of values and competencies within groups of people and the society.,Ph.D. |
