Description: | Early firm development does not currently benefit from the resource-based view since this view does not fully address the construction of resources in firms. The resourcebased view emphasizes on the final phase of resource development when firms’ resources have already been transformed into heterogeneous capabilities that contribute to the development of competitive advantage. This research gap can hinder the development of heterogeneous resources in new firms. Concurrently, theories of flexibility have gained importance in explaining the creation of capabilities to control and influence firms’ environment. These theories, which served as remedies to predominantly large firms, are pertinent in explaining the entrepreneurial processes in new firms. The main objective of this research is to increase understanding of the role of entrepreneurial strategic flexibility in the process of resource construction at new firms. Based on the extant literature on resource-based view, and theories of entrepreneurship and innovation, institutionalization, and flexibility, the study describes resource construction as a flexible-entrepreneurial process that supports the institutionalization of a firm. This study utilized the case study methodology and selected Malaysian biotechnology firms as the research setting. The study’s results show resource construction as a process of an entrepreneur’s strategic-flexible actions, founded upon his or her managerial experience. The managerial experience is build upon an entrepreneur-manager’s skill, knowledge and ability, and encompasses the functions of affect and cognition. Flexibility actions enable a firm to create and develop related capabilities and potential technological competencies that are deliberately aligned with the firm’s strategic aims to be institutionalized within its environment. These flexibility actions explain many situations involving the process of resource construction and entrepreneurial actions, as well as the general processes of innovation and entrepreneurship. A flexibility-resource construction framework categorizing firms’ specific flexibility actions and flexibility capabilities in the process of resource construction in new firms is generated. These insights are useful for both entrepreneurs of new firms and policy makers to improve entrepreneurial actions in supporting firms’ growth.,PhD |
