dc.descriptionInformal workplace learning is a critical human capital developmental approach for academics in higher education to enhance their work competency for employability. In wake of the demand of protean career, academics are expected to be competent and relevant to remain employable. This study was timely in exploring the informal workplace learning activities that academics undergo in equipping themselves continuously to achieve competencies. The analytical focus is on Fugate's Holistic Employability Model (2004) but also includes elements of other scholars' work. Three major areas were dealt in this study; firstly, to identify the informal workplace learning activites for employability, secondly, to discover factors that trigger informal learning to occur, and thirdly, to further define the concept of informal workplace learning for employability. The grounded theory approach was deployed in this qualitative study, where in-depth interview was utilized to collect data pertaining to academics engagement into informal workplace learning experiences and insights by superiors on important competencies that academics require for employability. The data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. This study found that academics who possess self-mastery and are proactive are likely to engage in informal learning activities either personally or socially through interaction with others. As learning occurs mainly during social interaction, the element of relational capital such as trust is crucial. Among the informal workplace learning activities that contribute to their competencies are involvement in teaching and research, collaboration with industry partners and participating in community program. This study contributes to Resource-Based theory where self-mastery is critical resource for human capital development. In addition, this study expands Fugate's Holistic Employability model (2004) in terms of competencies for employability by integrating academics adaptability, capitals (human and social) and career identity. This study also able to define the informal workplace learning for employability in the context of academics. Last but not least, the major managerial implication of this study is the need for academics to stay open, reflective, and remain resourceful in harnessing tacit knowledge by seizing every possible learning opportunity at workplace to achieve current and future academics competency for employability. In addition, institutional alike needs to upheld the value of informal workplace learning in addressing human capital developmental needs of academics,Ph.D
