Description: Cryptographic protocols consist of a sequence of steps precisely specifying the actions required of two or more entities to perform a task. Many lecturers agree that cryptography and Network Security is a difficult course to understand. The main reasons include: the complexity of security protocols, the mathematical rigour required to understand encryption algorithms and an overall lack of understanding of the principles behind a secure system design. Realizing the need for an interactive animation tool to facilitate the understanding of cryptographic concepts and protocols, several tools have been developed. However, some of these tools' animation cannot be easily adapted to animate different protocols and others are incomprehensive and they do not cater for some cryptographic operations. The aim of this research is to provide an interactive visual model for animating the behaviour of cryptographic protocols in order to facilitate the understanding of their behaviour and the formalization part. The proposed model adopted an active learning and constructivism theories; simple visual images to represent the parties and objects that are involved in the protocols; and apply an animation technique to represent the behaviour of the protocol. Based on the proposed model, an interactive animation tool, called the Cryptographic Protocol Animator (CPAnim), has been developed. The tool enables the students to specify a protocol and gain knowledge about the impact of its behaviour. The protocol is specified by using a scenario-based approach and it is demonstrated as a number of scenes displaying a complete scenario. The effectiveness of our tool was tested by an empirical evaluation. The experiment was conducted using the learning medium approach (No animation vs animation with CPAnim tool vs animation with the other chosen tool). The results have shown that this animation tool was effective in meeting its learning objectives and outperformed the other chosen tool. We believe that using CPAnim as an animated interactive tool will increase the students' ability for understanding the cryptographic protocol behaviour, and thus, enhance the awareness and understanding of the formalization part.,Ph.D
