dc.description | With the rapid proliferation of mobile arena, handheld devices are widely considered to be a driving force for next computing generation. As more and more people acquire handheld devices, the demand for developing application in these diminutive devices is also increasing. This challenge creates a foundation in ensuring the usability of the application developed. Varieties of research efforts have been made towards developing and constructing a model for ensuring usability in general. Although previous research efforts have made a lot of contributions, there are still some limitations. Unlike conventional applications, handhelds typically support a set of interactions that are oriented towards restricted input and output capabilities. Therefore, it is insufficient and irrelevant for the model to be adapted in evaluating its usability. Indicating this shortcoming as an inhibitor to the usability of handheld applications, the goal of this study is therefore to develop a model for measuring the usability of the handhelds applications. Specifically, it is designed to achieve three major objectives: identifying usability elements, constructing usability model and developing a supporting tool. This covers an empirical approach through five main phases of methodology: theoretical study, empirical study, model construction, tool development and confirmation study. As a result, a model which consist ninety-eight usability practices and five usability hierarchies are developed. This model outlined sixty-six metrics, twenty-one attributes, seven criterions, two factors and a goal. Namely Handheld Application Usability Measurement Model (HApps-UMM), three different categories of case studies were chosen to assess the applicability of the model in the real world aspects. With respect to the findings, it can be concluded thoroughly that this model is found significant and relevant in diagnosing and analyzing the usability of handheld applications. Furthermore, this model can be established as a concrete evaluation technique to be used during measuring the overall usability of handheld applications.,Ph.D | |
