Description: | Currently, web based technology has influenced the daily lives of individuals in various fields such as business, banking, health and education. The field of education is amongst the important field in this millennium era, as an individual can be differentiated clearly based on their level of education. Considering that most of the current knowledge can be accessed through the web based on virtual learning, posed problems to learners who have visual problems or are visually impaired. The visually impaired learners faced problems in accessing information on the Internet due to problems such as: i) the learners could not grasp the idea expressed from the information effectively, as the existing screen reader has limitation to describe images; ii) the learners did not know where the active window they were looking into; iii) the time taken for the learners to access the Internet took much longer especially with the unfamiliar webpage; and iv) the cost of the existing assistive tool is highly expensive. Knowing these problems, the research thus focused to mitigate and assist visually impaired learners in facilitating learning based on the virtual learning environment. Therefore, the objective of this research was based on two (2) aspects: i) Study the development of a voice recognition for the visually impaired learners to facilitate virtual learning; and ii) Study on the usability testing of the MgSys Visi-VL browser system. The system was developed based on the Iterative-Evolution System Development Life Cycle Model for the visually impaired learners called Model Kitar Hayat Pembangunan Iterasi-Evolusi Sistem Pengecaman Suara untuk Pelajar Kurang Upaya Penglihatan (MKH-Ie-MgSys Visi-VL). This development model comprised of six (6) phases: Initial planning & Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation & Integration and Evaluation Phase. The User-oriented approach was embedded in the development process of the system. Implementation of the evaluation on the system was conducted based on two (2) types: formative and summative evaluation. The formative evaluation was conducted during the design, development and implementation process based on the pilot study; whilst the summative evaluation was conducted during the last evaluation process based on field work. During the summative evaluation, usability testing was conducted based on four (4) constructs: learnability, efficiency, usability error and user satisfaction. Findings of the formative evaluation conducted through the pilot study showed that MgSysVisi-VL is suitable to be used as a learning aid to facilitate visually impaired learners in their virtual learning process. This is based on the positive results shown on the learnability and the efficiency constructs (72.91% and 70.8% for the attributes, respectively). Findings of the summative evaluation conducted based on the field work, showed very positive results for the learnability and the efficiency constructs ((83.75% and 89.35% for the constructs, respectively). This research has successfully contributed to these outcomes: (i) A browser system MgSys Visi-VL; (ii) the Iterative-Evolution System Development Life Cycle Model for the visually impaired learners (MKH-Ie-MgSys Visi-VL); (iii) Research instruments built for the usability testing; and (iv) Findings of the usability testing of MgSys Visi-VL.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available |
