Personal Information Management (PIM) describes the processes of keeping, managing, maintaining and re-finding personal information such as emails, files, bookmarks and photographs. Literature review showed that re-finding personal information is difficult and time-consuming, and PIM processes are disregarded. This study aims to propose the photographs re-finding framework based on personal information management processes. Accordingly, a review of the studies which cover PIM and Information Retrieval (IR) was conducted. Then, quantitative and qualitative data were collected through a questionnaire to explore the factors that affect re-finding personal photograph. Subsequently, a user evaluation based on experts review was applied to evaluate and refine the framework based on a recently developed personal photographs management system called PHOTO REFINDER. Finally, a user-controlled evaluation was conducted to assess the participants' efficiency in performing PIM processes. The features introduced in the photographs re-finding framework include delete in keeping process, tag and annotation in managing process, track all the changes in maintaining process, search and browse in re-finding process. The PHOTO REFINDER system is evaluated by supporting the participants to perform PIM processes in line with their activities starting from keeping until re-finding process. Findings revealed that the features introduced in PHOTO REFINDER make keeping and managing processes interesting, maintaining process satisfying and interesting, and re-finding process easy, relaxing, simple, satisfying and interesting. Findings also showed that participants were more engaged with PHOTO REFINDER even though they took longer time to complete keeping and managing processes than the Baseline system. In addition, the six factors that may affect the re-finding process were tested. The factors are amount of photographs, labelling strategies, maintaining photographs, role of human memory, computer literacy and retrieving strategies. There were 14 features supported these factors during re-finding process. As a result, group with a large number of photographs took less time in re-finding process than the group with a few number of photographs as they frequently used events timeline and searching by places. Participants who do not look at photographs regularly took less time in re-finding process than other groups as they frequently used searching by event. Expert participants took less time in re-finding process than novice participants as expert participants frequently used events timeline, searching by events, people and/or places. Participants who used searching method took less time in re-finding process than participants who used browsing method as they frequently used events timeline, searching by events, people and/or places. Participants were able to re-find photographs which were updated faster compared to photographs which were moved as the participants frequently used events timeline. This study contributes to PIM domain by clarifying the relationships among PIM processes and the features that can be used to support each process, and showing how comprising them in one framework could enhance information re-finding.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
