Description: | Computer networks and communications in general have an ever increasing role in countless aspects of the daily life; as the society is getting increasingly dependent on the technology, it has now became an integral part of our daily life. Therefore any event that may cause disturbance in network and communication service could eventually trigger a wave of interference throughout the community, which can indeed be very costly to the governments, businesses as well as individuals. Nevertheless these technologies are very vulnerable to various incidents such as natural disasters, technological accidents, malicious attacks and even terrorist attacks. Therefore the significant role of communication networks and its distinct vulnerability have prompted the need to improve the survivability of these networks. This will produce networks that are more resilient against failures with the ability to function in emergency situations. This research present a model to estimate the change in a network's traffic caused by such failure or multiple failures caused by a regional accidental disaster. The Accidental Disaster Network Impact Model (ADNIM) is a graphical model that is able to simulate different disaster originated failure scenarios on a given IP network in order to estimate the change in traffic caused by such failures. The model is designed to serve as an evaluation tool for existing networks' survivability or to evaluate potential networks in the design stages. The model was tested using the Wide Project Backbone daily traffic data from the MAWI Archive, and disaster information from the 2011 Tohoku disaster in Japan. The results shows that the model is capable of simulating scenarios very close to the real changes on the traffic during the disaster that corresponds with changes in traffic information in other related researches. ADNIM is then applied on simulated scenarios of regional IP network failures in Asia-Pacific region in order to evaluate the changes in traffic on local Malaysian IP network. The scenarios range from various types of failures including link, node, link and node as well as multiple failures. The model has been used to calculate scenarios that have taken place in the past and those that are likely to seriously jeopardize Malaysian IP networks. The simulations also comprise of local and regional triggers and different failure probabilities in different scenarios. As a result, key planning factors are identified for each case in order to be use for disaster strategic planning. These results include specific case of local network partitioning caused by a regional disaster trigger, which can completely isolate considerable part of the network.,Ph.D |
