A systematic revision of the genus Lejeunea (Marchantiophyta: Lejeuneaceae) in Malaysia is presented based on the examination of fresh plant materials and about 1000 herbarium specimens. The genus in Malaysia comprises 32 taxa among which three new synonyms are proposed i.e. Taxilejeunea cuculliflora Steph., Eulejeunea infestans Steph., Lejeunea tuberculosa Steph. and two new combinations are made viz. L. dipterota (Eifrig) G.E. Lee, L. exilis var. abnormis (Herzog) G.E. Lee. In addition, L. tamaspocsii G.E. Lee and L. malayensis G.E. Lee are described as new species. In the present study, another nine species are reported for the first time for Malaysia: L. alata from Pahang; L. cocoes from Perlis; L. compacta from Sabah; L. dimorpha from Kelantan and Pahang; L. fleischeri from Perak and Pahang; L. micholitzii from Kelantan, Pulau Langkawi, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang; L. papilionacea from Pulau Langkawi, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang and Selangor; L. umbilicata from Kedah, Perak, Selangor and Sarawak; and L. wightii from Kedah, Penang, Perak, Pahang and Selangor. In the course of this revision, three species of Lejeunea which were newly discovered in Peninsular Malaysia were described and illustrated viz. L. discreta Lindenb., L. eifrigii Mizut. and L. sordida (Nees) Nees and one new species i.e. L. gradsteinii G.E. Lee, A. Damanhuri & A. Latiff was described from Mt. Kinabalu, Sabah. New data and underused morphological characters are presented and used for the first time viz. the superior central cells, the cuticle of the leaf laminal cells, the oil bodies, and the vegetative propagules. An identification key to the species recorded in Malaysia is constructed. The genus Lejeunea is characterized by a combination of characters: 1) the hyaline papilla at the proximal side of the first tooth of the lobule; 2) the usual absence of ocelli in the leaf lobe; 3) lobules occasionally reduced and with one tooth; 4) small, granular to granularbotryoidal or homogeneous oil bodies; 5) underleaves without or with straight, upright lobes; 6) epidermal cells thin-walled and larger than the medullary cells; 7) branches of the Lejeunea-type; and 8) gynoecia with lejeuneoid innovations. According to the phylogenetic analysis based on 30 characters, Lejeunea is divided into subgenus 1 (eight taxa) and subgenus 2 (24 species). The division of the genus in two subgroups is mainly based on the number of superior central cells in the stem. The Lejeunea in Malaysia is mostly Malesian in distribution followed by tropical Asiatic and the paleotropical. One species is pantropical in distribution i.e. L. flava (Sw.) Nees and six are endemic to Malaysia viz. L. contracta Mizut.; L. exilis var. abnormis; L. gradsteinii; L. malayensis; L. pectinella Mizut.; and L. tamaspocsii. Most of the Lejeunea in Malaysia (ca. 60%) occur in the lower tropical montane forest (1450-2000 m alt.) and are mostly epiphytic with the corticolous and ramicolous species are the most common. All species are illustrated, their morphological characters are described and discussed in detail, and specimens examined are listed in full and distribution map for each species are provided.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available-
