dc.description | It is important to determine appropriate protein enrich diet and water quality parameters for ensuring proper growth, and physiological status of fishes. In this study the effects of commercial feed meals on water quality parameters, and physiology (e.g., growth, parameters, enzyme activity, and blood haematological and biochemical parameters) of freshwater B. schwanenfeldii at three different stages [fry (F): week 1-14, juvenile (J): week 16-30, and adult (A): week 32-46) were studied. The experiment was conducted for a period of 46 weeks in a controlled laboratory condition. The fish samples were fed with three types of proteinous diets (TP0: 32% protein, TP1: 28% protein and TP2: 23% protein) for and each diet treatments three replicates were used. Each replicate tank contained a stocking density of 330 B. schwanenfeldii which were fed twice daily at 5-10 % of the body weight. Results indicated that dietary protein levels of the feed meal generally improved growth performance (P < 0.05), water quality, and physiology of B. schwanenfeldii at all developmental stages. The TP0 with highest protein level (32%) feed to F, J, and A stages had remarkably higher BW (F:23.7g, J:71g, A:88.32g), L (F:11.3cm, J:17.99 cm, A: 19.61 cm), and SR (F:9.0% , J:13.9%, A: 58%) and lower Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) (F:0.04, J:0.02, A:0.04 ) as well as with greater pepsin enzymatic activity (>2.3 μ/mg). In contrary, the lowest performance was observed at TP2 (lowest protein level: 23%) with BW (F:10.11g, J:31.99g, A:51.75.32g), L (F:6.53cm, J:10.23 cm, A: 17.04 cm), and SR (F:4.7%, J:8.7%, A: 46%) and higher FCR (F:0.05, J:0.023, A:0.04 ) as well as with lower pepsin enzymatic activity (>1.9 μ/mg). Similarly, the TP0 also had an improved (P < 0.05) BOD (F:2.9 mg/L, J:3.3 mg/L, A:4.9 mg/L), chlorophyll-a (F:4.5 mg/L, J:6.9 mg/L, A:7.3 mg/L), DO (F:6 mg/L, J:6.4 mg/L, A:5.8 mg/L), and with a reduction in TSS (F:0.1 mg/L, J:0.21 mg/L, A:0.2 mg/L) and phosphate (F:0.1 mg/L, J:1.4 mg/L, A:1.4 mg/L) levels compared to TP1 and TP2. The RBC, hemoglobin, PCV, WBC, and platelet counts were significantly (P<0.05) decreases with decreases in dietary protein levels (from TP0 to TP2). However, the MCV increases with decreases in dietary protein levels. The TP0 had the greatest (P<0.05) values of total protein (67 g/L), albumin (34 g/L), A/G ratio (1.5), alkaline phosphatase (44 IU/L), and LDH (291 μmol) at adult stage while TP1 had lowest total protein (41 g/L), albumin (22 g/L), A/G ratio (0.9), alkaline phosphatase (27 IU/L), and LDH (207 μmol). In conclusion, the treatment with the highest protein level (TP0: 32% protein) appeared to be the optimal diet with highest influence on the B. schwanenfeldii growth performance, enzymatic activity, hematological, biochemical, and water quality parameters. The TP0 (32% protein enrich diet) dietary treatment is suggested for adoption and application as suitable feed for B. schwanenfeldii at all stages of growth in Tasik Chini Lake or any freshwater resources.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available | |
