dc.description | Previous research on reading comprehension showed that reading comprehension can be enhanced by utilizing a number of reading strategies, such as top-down and bottom-up strategies. With the advancement of technology and Internet, reading comprehension becomes increasingly dependent on the computerized and online materials. The purposes of this study are to investigate the effective of the interactive computer-assisted reading (I-CARe) in assisting Arab students in enhancing their reading strategies, and identify the challenges that students faced while engaging in ICARe program. To achieve these objectives, a case study was carried out involving six students at a private college. Accordingly, the data were collected using interview protocols, weekly reflection (diaries), observations checklist and open survey questionnaire. The data were analyzed qualitatively according to the main theme raised in the research questions such as feedback, helpfulness, specific elements and the use of three categories of reading strategies (cognitive, metacognitive and social effective strategies). In addition, the information obtained from the reflections (diaries), were analysed by taking into account the information provided. The analysis of the I-CARe questionnaire showed that using I-CARe program was effective and useful in developing students' reading comprehension and strategies as it was able to motivate students to become more independent learners; it was effective in changing their learning and reading behavior positively; and it helped them to reduce their reading anxiety. The analysis also revealed that the design of the I-CARe program provided students with materials, instructions, tutorials, and other contents that were easy to follow, relevant, useful, consistent, suitable, and challenging. The overall findings revealed that cognitive reading strategies was the most strategies the students employed while reading, followed by metacognitive and social affective strategies. These findings were confirmed by the students in their weekly reflections, as they reported that the program content, organization, and quick access were aspects that encouraged them to do and repeated the exercises many times so that they could master the reading strategies and to obtain full score in the reading exercises. The analysis also showed that the students faced fewer difficulties especially at the beginning, but the difficulties were reduced towards the end of the last week of the data collection. The findings hold important implications for teaching, reading curricula, and research concerned with improving the EFL learners reading strategies in online.,Ph.D. | - |
