Description: The West African and Southeast Asian regions continue to face inter and intra-state conflicts since their political independence, and that constitute serious threats to their stability. This has become a perpetual problem for which appropriate ways are needed to enable the two regions to manage as the root causes of such conflicts persist. It was in this context that ECOWAS and ASEAN emerged on the regional stage to address these conflicts through suitable strategies of collective conflict management. Therefore, more research on conflicts and their management by the two institutions remains relevant in the study of international relations. The objectives are to analyze the causes of conflicts in the two regions, to compare and contrast their conflict management experiences, and to apply the theory of neo-liberal institutionalism on their regional experiences. The theory emphasizes on regional cooperation through institutions among states with the aim of maximizing the absolute gains of every member irrespective of the relative gains that a particular member might make. To hypothesize, through a thorough comparative analysis of the past and present collective conflict management strategies of ASEAN and ECOWAS, significant lessons would be derived to enhance their future experiences in conflict management to assure better regional security. The research method is based on the qualitative approach of critical content analysis of secondary sources and materials related to the subject of international relations and conflict management, as well as interviews with experienced personalities in the field as some of the primary sources. Though the two regions share similar causes of conflicts, yet the many findings of this work point out to several variations in the strategies through which each regional grouping addresses the subject problem. Firstly, the strategy of military force for example, is nonexistent within ASEAN, while ECOWAS has in effect a military wing dedicated to this goal. Secondly, no state within each region tries to dominate the others. Thirdly, it is found out that ECOWAS has sharply declined in its zeal for collective regional action. Fourthly, it is observed that ASEAN exhausts the diplomatic option on which it depends entirely, while ECOWAS does not. Fifthly, the collective cooperation among the states in the two regions demonstrates that cooperation is indeed possible irrespective of the perception of relative gain dilemma. Despite their apparent weaknesses in many aspects, the two regional institutions are still considered internationally important in the experience of collective conflict management and the maintenance of international peace and stability.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
