Energy optimization for MANETs is essential to prolong lifetime of the network. Location Aided Routing (LAR) is one of the reactive routing protocols where the nodes use their location information to assist in routing. LAR is very efficient in maintaining a good packet delivery ratio and other network measures because it uses location information and geometrical representation to provide an efficient routing. However, one of the common problems in LAR is that it is energy unaware or it does not utilize the energy information in the routing. As a result, the network’s lifetime will be decreased comparing with other energy aware routing protocols. In this thesis, a developed Energy Efficient LAR is proposed and simulated. It considers energy in routing using a criterion function designed based on five important factors in the network: angle between in intermediate node and baseline, distance between intermediate node and destination node, energy of intermediate node, flooding ratio, and coverage zone ratio. Also, PSOLAR uses a Particle Swarm Optimization with mutation to optimize the criterion function. The optimization is done based on simulator of LAR network. The Performance metrics that have used are packet deliver ratio, end to end delay, and overhead and energy consumption. The results have shown that PSOLAR outperformed other benchmark of energy improved LAR protocol from perspective of most evaluation measures. Most importantly, the energy consumption for one packet has been reduced with a percentage of 93% when the number of nodes was 100 nodes with a PDR improvement of 67%. This developed model can be generalized to other protocols to reduce energy consumption.,Master of Computer Science,Certification of Master's / Doctoral Thesis" is not available"
