Description: | Science process skills is the foundation of science education which allow students to do an investigation and draw conclusion based on the findings. Initial analysis found that many students lack science process skills including for chemistry. Therefore the purpose of this study is to design a virtual chemistry laboratory model known as VirtChemLab, intended to teach science process skills using virtual reality technology. The objective of the study are: (i) to design a conceptual model for chemistry virtual lab, (ii) to develop a prototype VirtChemLab; and (iii) to evaluate the effectiveness and usability of VirtChemLab. Methodology used in this study is ADDIE model which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. In the analysis phase, a literature review of science learning approach, learning theories, virtual reality technology and questions prompt that provide scaffolding to learning were carried out. Online VirtChemLab prototype was built using interactive 3D objects and environments that provide direct feedback on the user's responses. VirtChemLab prototype was evaluated in a case study, using quasi-experimental approach of pre-and post-test. 30 respondents were involved in the evaluation of VirtChemLab; 15 in experimental group (X1) and 15 in control group (X2). The experimental group used VirtChemLab while the control group was taught by a teacher. All respondents were given pre-test before treatment and after the experiment, respondents are given post-test. Paired t tests was used for data analysis. Result shows that there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test marks for the experimental group. The experimental (X1) group using VirtChemLab showed a significant higher achievement in scores than the Control group (X2). Usability evaluation of the prototype was conducted on the prototype VirtChemLab by distributing questionnaires to the experimental group. Usability criteria evaluated are the display screen, content, multimedia, software and overall perception. The evaluation shows that the prototype has good usability (criteria mean of more than 4.00). Contributions of the study are; (i) the conceptual model of a virtual chemistry lab, (ii) instructional software design using question prompt scaffolding (iii) interface design and modules: Hypothesis, Variables, Apparatus, Experiment, Result, Conclusion, Lab Report, and Quiz for the education of science process skills and (iv) VirtChemLab prototype.,Tesis ini tiada Perakuan Tesis Sarjana / Doktor Falsafah" |
