Description: Disorientation problem has been known to exist on hypertext and hypermedia systems since they were first introduced. It is a primary reason for computer anxiety among web users. Disorientation can cause frustration, lost of interest and a measurable decline in performance. Various approaches have been recommended and implemented in order to eliminate or reduce it. However there is a lack of empirical evidence to suggest whether any of these approaches are successful. One reason seems to be the difficulty of measuring disorientation. Existing metrics that are used to measure the hypertext usability and disorientation involves tracking and observing a number of indicators. Commonly used indicators include number of errors committed and performance time. Studies have shown that one of the actions taken by users when they feel lost or disoriented is backtracking. Users normally backtrack to re-orient themselves in the environment. However, this parameter not included in known existing metrics. Therefore, this study explores of the relationship between disorientation and backtracking. An improved metrics is proposed in which three indicators are used; errors, performance time and backtrackings. A series of experiments were conducted to validate the efficiency of proposed metrics. The analysis on the results of these experiments showed that this improved metrics is a valid indicator of disorientation problem experienced by web users.,“Certification of Master’s/Doctoral Thesis” is not available,Master Information Technology
