Description: Communication errors found in Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN) are an area of concern. Cyclic Redundancy Codes (CRCs) are useful for maintaining integrity in data transmissions and are greatly affected by the polynomial chosen. This thesis proposes a new method of finding better CRC polynomials using heuristic search, as well as using resultant CRCs and encryption to improve error detection in WBANs. Recent increases in data throughput require a foray into determining optimal CRC polynomials through software or hardware implementations. Most CRC implementations in use, offer less than optimal performance or are inferior to their newer published counterparts. Classical approaches to determining optimal polynomials involve brute force based searching a population set of all possible polynomials in that set. This research evaluates performance of CRC-polynomials generated with Genetic Algorithms. It then compares the resultant polynomials, both with and without encryption headers against a benchmark polynomial. Results of comparison between enhanced CRC and our optimization of CRC shows that the latter has less number of undetected error packets which has been dropped from 2191 to 1220 when 300000 combinations of bit errors have been generated with 48 bits’ length. Due to the importance of the Ad-hoc On-Demand Vector protocol (AODV) routing protocol in WBAN, it was integrated with the proposed method in order to evaluate its performance. The main goal is to improve error detection which in turn improves the Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and network resource usage efficiency. Results showed that the method was successful as PDR increased and E2E delay decreased. Overhead had increased due to the usage of a new type of control message. Similarly, energy consumption had increased due to the sending of error messages and the retransmission of data packets. However, these increases were acceptable, appropriate to the gain in PDR which has reached 80% for stand up scenario and 23% for hand waving scenario.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
