Description: Mobile Ad-hoc network (MANET) consists of wireless mobile nodes, which dynamically establish a temporary network with no need to central administration or infrastructure. Energy consumption is one of the critical issues in MANET. The problem with the mobile nodes is that they depend on batteries, thus they lack a permanent source of power. This results in shortage of the network lifetime because of the fast exhaustion of nodes' batteries. This study makes use of the Bat Algorithm (BA) in order to optimize the consumption of energy in Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) protocol. Thus, the suggested protocol is called Bat Algorithm Optimized Link State Routing (BA-OLSR) protocol. The aim of using the BA is to find the optimal path from the source to the destination nodes in order to decrease the energy consumption in OLSR routing protocol. MATLAB toolbox was used to evaluate the performance of the suggested protocol. Moreover, the performance of the BA-OLSR was compared with both standard OLSR protocol and Energy Based Optimized Link State Routing (EB-OLSR). This comparison was evaluated depending on packet delivery ratio, an end to end delay, energy consumption, routing overhead ratio and network lifetime performance metrics, varying the number of nodes, the node speed and simulation time. The result showed that the suggested BA-OLSR saves energy and extends the network's lifetime better than the standard OLSR and EB-OLSR in all of the performance metrics.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
