Description: A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a collection of wireless mobile nodes that dynamically form a temporary network without using any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. Therefore, the strategy of forwarding the data packets from the source to the destination is the ultimate target of any routing protocol. This research utilizes the swarm intelligence technique through the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm to optimize the energy consumption in a Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) protocol. The proposed protocol is called Bee Dynamic Source Routing (BEEDSR). The goal of using the ABC algorithm is to find the optimal path from the source to the destination for overcoming the energy problems caused by the overload packet from source to destination nodes. The performance of the proposed BEEDSR protocol was evaluated using the NS2 2.34 simulator. The performance of the BEEDSR protocol has been compared with DSR and Bee-Inspired Protocols (BeeIP). The comparison was conducted based on the energy consumption, throughput, delay, overhead and packet delivery ratio performance metrics, varying the node speed and packet size. The BEEDSR outperformed the BeeIP under wide network performance metrics and settings. The BEEDSR protocol achieved 0.47% and 1.52% energy saving with respect to node speed and packet size. In terms of delay, the BEEDSR achieved up to 67.46% and 21.33% degradation with respect to node speed and packet size.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
